our story
Established in the midst of a recession and determined to prosper, the story of EngineHouse reflects two of the characteristics that best define our home city of Pittsburgh: integrity and grit.
After moving to Pittsburgh in 2003 to attend Carnegie Mellon’s School of Architecture, founding partners Adam Lackett and Kellen Fenaughty fell in love with the city’s character and architectural potential. In 2011, following explorations in the fields of architecture, construction, landscape design, and furniture making, the two friends founded the business in the engine room of a decommissioned Wilkinsburg fire station.
Longtime EngineHouse collaborator and Pittsburgh native Ian English became a partner in 2016. Together, Adam + Ian are dedicated to creating rich relationships within the Pittsburgh community. They share a passion for hard work, a love of honest, sustainable materials, and a desire to contribute durable, long-lasting investments to the local infrastructure.
EngineHouse is a group of like-minded makers dedicated to building spaces that are sustainable and enduring. Here, people come first: we live and work with intent and integrity, bringing a fresh approach to the conventional construction process. We offer high-touch residential, commercial, institutional, and fabrication services driven by a commitment to the holistic integration of the design + build processes and the betterment of our communities. Our offices and fabrication shop are located in a restored cabinet shop and historic warehouse in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh’s East End.
